Middle School Retreat Team Blue

Middle Schoolers Climb a Volcano

At the end of April the Middle School Retreat was on Ometepe Island.  Luke went with 34 students and 7 other leaders.  Their challenge was to climb Maderas Volcano.  Although it was tough, all of them made it to the top!  We were really proud of them!  It was a 10 hour hike and very slippery on the way down due to the rain.  Everyone came back exhausted, dirty, yet exhilirated from accomplishing their goal.  It was also a great time of sharing spiritual analogies such as perseverance.  Some kids decided to carry a rock in their backpack all the way to the top, symbolizing a burden they were bringing up in surrender to Christ. High School Retreat Session

High School Retreat 2010

At the end of May we spent the weekend with high schoolers at a retreat center 45 minutes outside of Managua.  It was much cooler up there!  We had 51 kids and 9 adult leaders.  The weekend was filled with team games such as ultimate frisbee, 3X3 basketball, dodgeball, capture the flag, etc.  Some also played water polo and did the slip 'n slide.  Throughout the weekend we had sessions with worship and a message.  One session we met in small groups dividing guys and girls.  Overall, it was a really fun weekend for the kids to hang out, enjoy wonderful food, play together, worship together, and seek God side by side.

Us on the Rio San Juan

Traveling down the Rio San Juan

The day after NCA's graduation, we left on a four day trip on the San Juan River.  It is south of us and forms part of the border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica.  We traveled with a few other teacher friends.  Our adventure included lots of boat rides, getting soaked in the rain, and finding a place to stay each night.  We visited El Castillo (an old Spanish fort used to protect the river from pirates) and a Natural Reserve.  We also did a night tour to find crocodiles.  Our guides caught a baby crocodile to show us.  We're glad we went on the trip and got to experience a different part of Nicaragua.

End of the Year Highlights

  • Celebrating with our 18 NCA graduates (8 of whom we worked closely with in Youth Group)
  • Ellen's classroom wall getting knocked out the day after school was over (it is being expanded over the summer!)
  • Attending a Nica-American wedding between one of our teacher friends and a Nicaraguan girl (also, one of Ellen's students from this year was a beautiful flower girl).
  • Kicking off our summer Bible reading with Youth Group.  It's called "two4eight".  Find our group on Facebook if you want to join us in reading through 1 & 2 Samuel, Luke, and Acts.

Prayer and Praise

  • Praise God that NCA has all of our teacher openings filled for next school year!
  • Praise God for an exciting year in Youth Group, full of meaningful relationships and spiritual growth!
  • Pray for safe travels as we visit our families for a few weeks this summer.
  • Pray for rest and renewed strength for a new school year starting August 9th.
